Rehabilitation with truFlex

Whenever there is a need for rehabilitation, whether from injury or musculoskeletal deterioration from aging or absence of use, the primary goals are to promote blood flow to the affected area(s) and prevent atrophy of the muscles. Depending on the degree and cause of the malfunction this can be done at home with the “REST” technique, with in-home and/or office support through stretching and strengthening exercises via Physical Therapy (PT) or Occupational Therapy (OT), as well as manual manipulation and intervention via massage, chiropractor or acupuncture practitioners. These are all great techniques and resources that contribute towards getting you back in working order and achieving the highest quality of life possible. Unfortunately, all these techniques and support aren’t always enough to get you there in a timely manner or are not always accessible due to physical limitations. In comes, truFlex!

What is truFlex and how does it work?

truFlex by Cutera is a cutting edge technology that provides targeted multi directional electrical stimulation to most any muscle in the body. Exercising and using a muscle helps improve blood flow to that muscle which provides much needed nutrients for healing, strengthening and growth. Any intervention intended to repair or improve muscles will focus on therapies and activities that will improve blood supply. The same is true for truFlex. It is the only machine on the market that safely provides up to 54,000 muscle contractions to any muscle/muscle group it is applied to without requiring any strain on the skeletal system or risking further injury to the body. Using muscle stimulation in a therapeutic environment is a common tool to support the rehabilitation of a patient. We work with our patients on an individual basis and in conjunction with their health care providers to provide the highest quality and most effective treatment we can.

When do we use truFlex?

We most commonly use truFlex before and after surgery to help provide strength and stability for post op patients, especially for those who are older and pose higher risk for falls, and prepare patients to get the most out of their PT either from preparing with truFlex or by using it in conjunction with their therapy after surgery (when safe to do so). It can fast track the healing process enabling fast recovery and less overall pain as we can minimize the aggravation that traditional healing and strengthening methods alone. TruFlex is great to use after injury, when building muscle strength is what will be most beneficial to get you back in optimal health but the injury or complication related to the injury prevents you from being able to do the active work required to get there. In the absence of active injury or recovery, truFlex is a tool to help manage musculoskeletal pain from arthritis or other conditions. It can help strengthen your core; improving posture, alleviating chronic back pain, and helping to build up atrophied muscles in the elderly.
